Tips and Helpful Hints

Tips on Caring for Blind Pets

Environment:

  • Secure areas around water (pools, beaches, lakes, canals) and busy roads
  • Install gates at stairs and remove hazards from high traffic areas
  • Avoid sudden, loud noises
  • Supervise interactions with young children and/or other pets to prevent startling your blind pet
  • For added face protection, consider use of Optivizor or Halo harness

Lighting:

  • Use night lights, flashlights, collar lights, etc for pets with light perception

Navigation:

  • Use distinct scents in different rooms (e.g. apple in the kitchen, lavender in the bedroom)
  • Retain food/water bowls and litterboxes in the same location
  • Keep furniture and floors consistently arranged and free of obstacles
  • Use tactile cues like rugs or mats

Identification

  • Use a collar, leash/harness, bandana, or tags indicating that your pet is blind

Training

  • Teach sound cues for navigation and daily activities
  • Incorporate scent and sound toys
  • Use vocal and touch signals to alert your pet to your presence; consider commands like “step up” or “step down”
  • Attach bells to your shoelaces and on other pets
  • Consult with a veterinarian or trainer if you have any behavior issues
