What is a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist?

A board certified veterinary ophthalmologist is a licensed veterinarian who has completed advanced, specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases in animals. To become board certified by the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ABVO), a veterinarian must:

  • Receiving a doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine.
  • Completing one or more years of advanced training in general medicine and surgery.
  • Completing a three year ophthalmology residency program at an approved college or clinic.
  • Successfully completing a rigorous certifying examination administered by the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ABVO) that includes testing of diagnostic and surgical skills.
